There are two methods for selecting a role. You can either use the role selection dialog to select the role every time you open a new project, or manually set the role in the File layout. If you set the role manually, the role is set as the default one and the role selection dialog does not appear when opening new projects.

If you do not have a default role already selected before opening an IFC file (and you have set the Show Role Selection option active in General settings), the first time you open the Checking or the Information Takeoff layout you are prompted to select a role for the type of work you wish to accomplish:
You can see the description of each role in the text box on the right. The description explains what function the role performs and which resources are included. To choose a role, select one from the radio button list and click Next. You will then be prompted to select rulesets for checking or ITO definitions for ITO.
If you are going to be repeatedly performing the same functions as identified with a specific role, you can set that role as a default one. To set a default role:
-
Click File, then Roles.
-
Click Open.
-
Select the XML file and click Open. The role you have opened is now set as the default one.
Another way to set a role as default is to mark the Save as Default Role checkbox in the Please Choose a Role dialog:
After checking this box, whenever you open an IFC file in a new project, your role will default do whatever you had selected in the dialog and the corresponding default resources will automatically be loaded.
Tip
If you have set a default role, and wish to go back and have the Please Choose a Role dialog open again when starting new projects:
-
Click File, then Settings, then General.
-
The General settings dialog opens:
-
Mark the Show Role Selection checkbox:
-
Click OK.
-
Restart the software to apply the new settings. The next time you start a new project and open an IFC file, the Please Choose a Role dialog will reappear when you open the Checking or ITO layout.
